Common Questions You Might Be Too Embarrassed To Ask Your Massage Therapist

Are you nervous about visiting a massage therapist? Are you unsure of the Dos and Don’ts of your massage session? Do you have questions for your therapist that you are too embarrassed to ask? Don’t worry; you are not alone. A visit to a massage therapist can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

Your level of comfort with your massage therapist directly influences the quality of your massage session. Therefore, you must be relaxed and comfortable during your massage to make the most of it.

Fortunately, Active Back to Health is here to help. We asked our registered massage therapists the questions you were too embarrassed to, so you can walk into your next session assured and confident. Read on to learn what these questions are and their most appropriate answers.

How Much Clothing Should I Remove?

In a nutshell, this is entirely up to you. There is no right or wrong answer. You can wear as little or as many clothes as you feel comfortable in. Naturally, the lesser clothing you have on, the easier it is for your massage therapist. However, you don’t have to remove pieces of clothing you don’t want to.

Generally, for the best results, exposure is necessary. For instance, if your shoulders hurt, a tight-fitting shirt may get in the way of your massage. Again though, you don’t have to remove your shirt if you don’t want to. An experienced therapist will find a way to work around it.

Keep in mind however, that oil during the massage can get onto your clothes. Thus, weigh up the pros and cons before deciding to wear your favorite clothes to a massage session.

What Happens If I Fall Asleep?

Falling asleep during a massage is more common than you think –  it’s completely normal.. Sleep is the body’s natural response to feeling relaxed and comfortable, and a massage therapist will recognize this. You are not the first person to fall asleep during a massage, and you won’t be the last.

In fact, a massage therapist may take this as a compliment. Usually, a massage therapist will continue the massage without waking you up unless necessary. In addition, when the session is over the therapist will gently let you know, so you don’t have to worry about falling asleep during a massage.

What If I Need To Pass Gas?

Again, the need to pass gas during massage therapy is completely normal. This is because a massage can stimulate and activate your gut.

Ideally, you’d ask your therapist to point you in the direction of a restroom. Therapists are well aware of the effects of a massage on your body and are not likely to be offended.

Can I Talk?

It’s totally up to you. Do what works best for you. If you prefer to relax and stay quiet during the session, it’s perfectly okay. On the other hand, if you want to engage in a light conversation that works too. A massage therapist is not going to be offended by whichever route you choose.

However, it is essential to tell your massage therapist if something doesn’t feel right. Maybe, you are too cold, or the therapy is causing excessive pain. Not only will the therapist appreciate it, but it will also help you make the most of your session.

Should I Tip?

This depends on where you choose to get your massage. Generally, you do not have to tip unless you’re in a hotel or spa. A standard 15-20% tip should suffice in such instances.

Even though it’s unnecessary, a tip can be a worthy reward for a job well done. A therapist will appreciate it and will help keep them motivated going forward.
